Tribble is a Wearable Security Camera and More

Update 6/22/2017. Tribble backers are claiming the product is a scam = no product, no communication, no refund. We do not currently recommend backing this product.

Every so often, I come across a device that blows my mind. Tribble, a multi-purpose disc-shaped wearable security camera, is one of those devices. Part of its mind-blowing capability is its tiny size, the other part is its incredible functionality. And after a successful crowdfunding campaign, it looks like Tribble may be coming soon.

Tribble At First Glance

Tribble is defined on the company’s indigogo page as a “wearable device”. Although that makes it sound like a smart watch, Tribble can’t really be categorized as one. After hours of research, I can’t decide exactly what you should call Tribble.
I can tell you what it looks like. It’s a small disc with an LCD screen. Measuring under 2 ¾ inches in height and width, less than ½ inch in depth and under 5 ounces, it’s about the size of a jar lid.

The disc is sleek and stylish. Available in silver or black stainless steel, Tribble attaches to any smooth surface. There’s also a holder available for purchase that straps it around objects. It looks like a seriously cool gadget- something that a secret agent might plant under an evil villain’s car to track down his hideout.

A Closer Look

Tribble wears many hats, making it hard to label the device. Here are some of the things it can do for you:

1. Security at Home or Away

Tribble has several home security applications. It works as a motion detector, sending notifications to the Tribble app on your smartphone. You can choose “active zones” or have the camera monitor its whole field of view. The active zones come in handy if you have a pet you don’t want setting off the motion sensor every few minutes.
Tribble also tracks sound. If there’s an unusual noise in your home, you’ll get a notification. Finally, there’s live feed available, so you can see what’s going on all the time. In a worst case scenario, you can even call emergency services through the app.

Tribble can see during the day but also at night vision, making it very useful as a baby monitor. Combined with the motion detection and a two-way mic and speaker, Tribble gives you all the tools you need to look after a sleeping (or waking) baby.

The 64 and 128 GB versions of Tribble come with a GPS tracker. You can stick it in your child’s backpack and use it to locate her whereabouts, or put it in your luggage to pinpoint its location if it gets stolen.

2. Stay connected to your home when you’re away.

Check in on your kids with the live feed- you might get a glimpse of your baby’s first words or catch your child watching TV during homework time. You can speak to them through the app as if you were in the room. You can even record video or take a snapshot of anything you see. Video clips can be as long as you want and the memories store to any cloud service.

3. A better hands-free option.

My phone might as well be superglued to my hand. Fortunately, Tribble is strong enough to break that bond.
Tribble tells you when you get emails, texts and phone calls. It also tells you who sent them, so you don’t rush to call back that eager car salesman.

You can also use Tribble to respond to phone calls, texts, emails or social media messages. Phone calls can be answered by swiping the screen, and you can dictate texts or emails into the device.

Hands-free directions (only with the 64 GB and 128 GB version) come in handy while in your bike or in the car. Map out your route on your phone, then Tribble does the work for you. Because it sticks on any smooth surface, you don’t need to worry about finding a compatible holder.

4. Tribble makes time at home more enjoyable.

Life at home is a little more fun with Tribble. You can play music from platforms like Spotify, Youtube, and iTunes with the touch of a finger on the LED screen. It has a built-in Harmon/Kardon speaker but I’m not sure if it can play music remotely from the app and Tribble did not respond to my list of questions. And though the option to play music is cool, I can't imagine this replacing my Bose anytime soon.

Another bit of fun-ness - Tribble will whisper sweet nothings. You can use the pre-programmed message or customize your own.

Tribble is a device that’s hard to define; it breaks the mold. Is it a security camera? Baby monitor? Speaker? Smart watch? You can’t label it as one thing because it has so many features working together to form one pretty amazing device.

Everything about Tribble looks great on paper... If it all comes together, it’s going to be like nothing else on the market. The retail price is listed at $169 plus shipping for the 16 GB, $189 for the 64 GB and $209 for the 128 GB.

Of course, there’s always the chance it doesn’t meet expectations once it’s shipped out. The expected shipping date is August 2016.

I can’t tell you if Tribble will live up to its promise. I only know one thing for sure- I’ll be keeping my eye on Tribble. You can checkout their campaign here.
